Writerly work-flow

I need a new short story. It makes me feel stagnant to have nothing moving forward. The two shorts finished are submitted and pending at magazines, but ideally there would be some pending, some accepted, some being resubmitted elsewhere (because they were rejected) and some under construction.

I like work to always be happening at all stages of the process.

Editing of the novel is always in process, so it doesn’t really feel like it counts. On a grand scale, though, if it were finished and in the shopping process, then the short story work-flow could be replicated on the novel scale, but that’s a long ways off yet.

Where do story ideas come from? I’ve taken to reading headlines from Science News Daily. Lots of ideas there. One snagged my imagination but I haven’t found a good plot for it yet.

Today I’ll try creating an outline/timeline for that idea and see if anything develops.

  1. I think stories come from observing what happens around us and then observing what that does inside of us. And a lot of hard work and swearing.

  2. Yes, that is true. Sometimes I don’t notice the story idea starting so I don’t know where it came from, though. LOL about the hard work and swearing.

  3. Thanks :) The editing part is definitely ‘work’, but it just doesn’t feel so satisfying because I can’t see the result so easily or as quickly.
