Reluctance to Engage – A question for bloggers

I so very rarely have a rant. And this isn’t technically a rant. But at the risk of offending some in the blogosphere, I’m going to ask this question. It has niggled me long enough. This hasn’t happened today or even recently. I just decided to go on and ask about it.

Since I’ve started blogging, I’ve noticed something that bothers me.

Lots of times I’ll go to blogs and leave a comment, especially on WP blogs because it’s so easy for me to see when a response is made to that comment either by the blog owner or another commenter. I also return to blogs on other formats, but maybe not as frequently.

The unanswered question is this:

Why do some bloggers not engage or respond to their commenters?

I see this all the time and it continues to baffle me. I understand not responding to each and every comment if there are tons of comments, or if the only response would be ‘yeah’ or ‘thanks’, but some don’t even respond where there’s only one comment. Even when I leave a direct question.  Yeah, this bothers me.

What is the unspoken blogger’s creed regarding interaction with blog followers and commenters? Am I missing something, or what?

I am not asking to be critical. I’m asking because I want to understand. If you don’t respond to the commenters on your blog, please tell me why not. I hope to get some answers, but in the meantime I think I’ll Google to see if anyone else has ever asked this question before…

Writerly Saturday morning

Not too much to blog about today. I’ve noticed that it’s a beautiful day outside so at some point I’ll make myself either walkabout or sit on the porch or some other how get some of that nice-ness absorbed.

The problem is two-fold. My allergies are really getting to me this fall. I haven’t had issues like this in years. So I’m a little reluctant to go outside at all. But there’s also a story wanting out, and it’s been very difficult to stay away from the keyboard long.

Even if I’m not actively writing, sitting in place connects me to it somehow. Difficult to describe, but it’s like being a receiver and staying open for the transmission… that staying open part is easier if I’m at the computer. A notebook doesn’t work the same for me. Notebooks are great for random ideas, though, and I use one a lot for that.

Okay, I think I’ll eat breakfast on the porch while the air is humid enough to perhaps keep the pollen on the ground.

Happy #amwriting to all you other writers out there! (That phrase will be lost on non-Twitter users, I know…if you don’t tweet substitute with ‘writing’ ;)
