Writerly Goals update

I love it when Monday rolls around and I’ve actually made great progress toward my goals.

Chapter 23 of Symbiosis is edited enough for now. 22, 23 and 24 span a difficult scene for me. I’ve tried to make sure the line isn’t crossed between too much information and not enough.

And my next short story is well underway. I’m about 1/3 of the way through what I expect to become another 5 - 8K short story, but the outline/synopsis is already written so I have a good idea of where I’m going with it. Just a matter of filling in details and fleshing out scenes and clearing up inconsistencies.

The surprising thing is that my first draft is cleaner than previous first drafts were so I’m expecting the editing phase of this one will be shorter than those in the past. The deadline (it’s another WotF contest entry) isn’t until Dec. 31 so I have some time, but I don’t want to wait to the last-minute. It’s hard to get crit time during our weekly meetings often enough to ensure enough feedback to make editing calls. So I need time for that.

This week’s goals:

  • Edit chapter 24 of Symbiosis
  • Add another 1000 words to the short story

This year’s goals:

  • Finish editing Symbiosis
  • Write and submit six short stories to pro markets
