Sunday Musings

Not a whole lot to blog about today in the writerly arena of my life. At least, I say that now. It seems that when I’m done with my musings even when I think there wasn’t much to say, there are more words on the page than I expected.

I’m still in edit mode, revision mode for the short story,  specifically. I think I was deluded by a myth. I thought ‘edit’ meant grammar and structure. And of course it does. But it means so much more than that! Sometimes it means rewriting entirely when an ‘edit’ causes domino-like effect throughout the story.

One day I hope to be able to write it right the first time through. But that’s probably the perfectionist in me speaking and the reality will be hopefully at least somewhat better than the present.

So I was right, I didn’t have much musing to do today. I have a list of things I need to do on the non-writerly front though, so I’m heading outside to take care of that now. The weather is beautiful and I’m not complaining.

What’s the rest of your weekend looking like? Do you generally do family and non-writerly things, or are you trying to cram in as much writing on your days off as possible?

  1. It would be nice, wouldn’t it, to be able to get ir right first time. It always seems to me that the ‘improvement’ generates more work than you ever imagined it could.

We travelled to France all day yesterday so I was looking forward to catching up with the Friday Fictioneers today, but it seems there’s some kind of a problem with WordPress; I’ve only been able to reach your site, and mine, very briefly today.

Have a nice ‘rest of the weekend’. :)

  2. We are having beautiful weather here–absolutely gorgeous–so I’m about to get off the computer and go enjoy just being in the sun. I’ve made a big change with my blogging (it’s easier to go read than tell you here). Hope this Friday’s stories were good ones–I didn’t get a chance to participate, or read but one story. Missed you! Bye for now :)

  3. I have my kids this weekend so my writing has been put on hold. We watched the Muppets and Hugo. I enjoyed both. Last night at about 2 am I was able to push a short poem out….. I normally write when the mood strikes me(most days) but I am trying to write a poem a day for fourteen days..I believe this is day six and I have six up. So after the house went hush I cracked opened the first beer of the day/night and sat down to write. The ugly results are up! you can check them out if you like http://blog.tompoet.com

So true. Welcome to the world of edits. The great thing is that by the time you finish you should have a story that is solid and that you’re proud of. It takes a lot of work, but it’s well worth it in the end.

  5. I had one of my grandbabies this weekend, so I didn’t get much writing done either except what I could while she was sleeping. I’ll go read your in a little while and there’s still lots of Fictioneer stories still to read. So this evening will be reading and editing. While there’s still daylight to burn, though I’ll be working with my horses. Thanks for checking in!

  6. Somewhere in France I have relatives. One day I’d like to meet them. We’ve traced the ancestry of my father’s line to the sailor and the ship he came over on, and I know the port of departure. It may be next year, but Rob and I are supposed to make that trip sooner or later. His father’s ancestry is German, so we’d like to go to both countries.

    Have a great evening!

  7. It’s been beautiful here too! I’ll be over at your blog in just a few minutes to see what you’ve been up to :)

  8. Haha, I was soooooo naive. I just hope my editor is patient with me. It’s going to take hard work to get this story back to her before April 15 because I don’t get much time to just plow into writing. Most of what I do is here and there stolen minutes. Need to get back to my 4 am start to the day, but the time change messed my schedule up. I am vowing to do that tomorrow though. No more time to waste.
