LexiCon Writer’s Conference
After a year and a half of planning, organizing, and some arm twisting, the LexiCon Writers Conference is six plus weeks away. It’s been a long, difficult road and I’m so excited to see in coming to fruition.
.
The LexiCon is taking place in Denton, Texas on July 21-22, 2012. What makes this conference different that a lot of the other conferences is that none of the speakers are being paid to attend. I ran into this situation early in the organizational process – that a lot of literary agents, publishers, and editors wanted to be paid and have their expenses reimbursed in order to attend the conference. I know that’s the way business has been done in the past but I refuse to pay anyone to come to an event where they will acquire clients, exposure, and sales. In that respect, this conference is more like a trade show where people come to network and meet vendors. I’ve got some incredible people coming to speak at the conference who seem to understand that concept.
.
The publishing industry has changed drastically in the last few years. First, and most importantly, there are so many new ways to get published rather than the old query letter, agent, publishing contract with a big house way. Self publishing is exploding, independent publishers are flourishing, while literary agents and big publishers are feeling the heat. Consequently, the author is being forced to undertake more of the editing and marketing/promotional requirements. This conference gives them a road map to follow for success.
