Welcome to my blog!
Who: Madison Woods (Madison C. Woods if you’re looking for me at Author’s Den).
What: I’m a part-time writer working toward a full-time writing career. I write speculative fiction. Sometimes it has a dark edge but it’s almost always surrealistic. A blend between fantasy, science fiction and magical realism with a touch of horror.
When: Almost always. When I’m not physically typing, I’m thinking. Thinking counts! For me, writing requires lots of pondering.
Where: Mostly at my desk at home.
Why: Because I have to.
***
That ought to have covered all the things I’m *supposed* to put on my ‘About’ page. Ooops. I forgot. We’re supposed to state what our blogs are for.
This blog is designed to be my virtual calling card. I have samples of my work under the Flash Fiction tab. It’s also a place where I give back to my writerly community. Where I ‘pay it forward’ by helping others and sharing what I am learning along the way.
When I’m not working the dayjob, I’m usually writing. Otherwise I’m hiking and taking photos of nature and medicinal plants, gardening organically and studying permaculture techniques, working with my horses, or putting out any number of fires (not the literal kind, thank goodness) that crop up at any given time on an old farm property.
One day, if all works according to plan, I’ll be working from home with Rob, my soul-mate and partner in everything (and now fiance’ - he always said he planned to make an honest writer of me one day…). We’ll get this old homestead, or another one similar to it, in working order again so we can finally live sustainably and get off the hamster wheel of consumerism.
Living in the rural Arkansas Ozarks provides me with close communion to Nature and much fodder for blog and story ideas.
I also sometimes write non-fiction articles about rural life, Nature, ginseng and native medicinal plants.
My genre is speculative fiction, and I think it falls under the slipstream category. I could be wrong. But it doesn’t fit ‘Fantasy’ neatly and the science isn’t hard enough for me to be comfortable calling it ‘Science Fiction’. Although most of the time there is a romantic element to my stories, they don’t fit the ‘Romance’ category either. Almost all of it is set in worlds that are not-quite-ordinary, yet not completely foreign.
Here are my publishing credits and endeavors.
Here are some other ways to communicate with me besides this blog:

LIKE my Facebook Author Page (if you prefer not to be ‘friends’ let me know because once someone ‘likes’ my page, I usually send a friend request.)
Three Questions:
- What influences the essence of *you* most? Nature, wilderness and my place in it

- What is your favorite food? Anything cajun except oysters

- What is your favorite past-time? (besides writing!) photography
This page has the following sub pages.

Hi Roxann. I just dropped and thought I’d say Hi to a fellow writer. I happen to write YA fiction having started out by writing short fiction. I think your pen name is kind of cool!
Thanks, Laura. I’m always happy to meet fellow writers
I’ll head on over to your blog now…
Funny, that I would stumble onto your blog. I noticed that you have an interest in native medicinal plants and I do as well. In fact, I wrote about it in my YA novel. So this is great that we not only have writing in common but this as well! Very cool!
BTW I’ve added you to my google reader!
Sweet! Did you get a chance to go by my herbal site? I have a homestead site, too, it might be listed on my about page…can’t remember. Email me if it’s not there and I’ll send you the link. On those two sites I go by my real name, and my family probably wouldn’t know who “Madison” is, so if you comment there, call me “Roxann”. LOL.
We have genetics in common, if you’re family is from the Novia Scotia region, too. My father’s side immigrated here from France, but many of my more distant relatives are from the French who came down to Louisiana from Nova Scotia. Maiden name is Templet (prounounced ‘Tom-play’ for all you non-Frenchies
.
Okay, I’ll check out your site!
Weird again, some of my ancestors on my mother’s side also came from France….. They were Veinotte’s
Small world!
Hi Roxann,
Just sorted out your pen name and was struck by the similarity between Madison Woods and Ironwoodwind. I chose that name because of the soft soughing sound the wind makes in the Ironwoods that form a windbreak between Parker Ranch land and the small ranch I live on here in Hawaii.
The blog listed above is designed to convey a sense of the peace I feel during moments of serenity.
Nice to meet you. I’ll drop in now and then and say hello. Have to run now. Last shift of my strange job atop Mauna Kea. Goodnight.
Doug
Doug, as I sipped my coffee this morning while sitting on the swing, the wind passed through the valley a few times. I’ve never heard how it sounds specifically through ironwood trees (although we have them here), but the sound of the wind is special here, too. A whispering chorus, starting high on the ridge-tops before eventually reaching the valley bottom and moving past my point of reference toward the east.
There were no other sounds this morning to detract from the experience – nature’s stage entirely.
I’ll have to go find your blog now – thanks for visiting and commenting!
Hi, nice to meet you !
Hi Roxanne,
Just a little note to let you know I am reading your blog with immense pleasure. Nature I dig and I am sure to have fun and discover much more about you over the next little while.
Kindest,
Michael

Hi Dan and thank you for the award
When I came to my about page to see your comment, I noticed that it was back to my old page and my new revision was gone! So I’ve updated it again. I will try very hard to fulfil the duties bestowed upon me by that award, but no guarantees, lol. I appreciate you thinking of my blog.

Hello Madison,
I think your Friday Fictioneers initiative is amazing and I’m looking forward to finding out more about the writers that take part to it.
Forgive the quick and dirty side note: you may want to check the first link in the “Book Reviewers” widget, it results in an error. Perhaps the permalink of the intended blog changed meanwhile.
Thank you! And thanks for the note about Maggie’s link. I fixed it – I’d accidentally linked it to the comments not the page itself. Hope to see you around on Fridays
I like your blog! And I love this whole Friday Fictioneers thing. Hope you don’t mind one more writer joining in!
There’s *always* room for one more
We’d be glad to have you on board – either post one now or join us this week. The photo will be posted Wednesday!

Ah, but I have been very very neglectful about fulfilling the duties of awards I’ve received. I just don’t have any extra time these days, but I very much appreciate your thinking of me.

Since I moved up here, I eat far less rice but it was staple down in south Louisiana where i grew up.
Hi! I’ve been following your web site for some time now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from New Caney Texas! Just wanted to say keep up the fantastic work!
I love living in the rural Texas panhandle on our farm, being outdoors, watching incredible sunsets from the porch with my DH/BFF (Dear Husband), driving dirt roads looking for inspirations to photograph for future paintings and/or drawings (hopefully), we have so many projects planned for this old place we would have to live to be a hundred to complete them but the planning and dreaming keeps us going! Our 2 daughters and their families live within 6 miles of us and we are great grandparents too!
I love food! The only thing I don’t like is cauliflower and oysters! Love to have a family fishing day at our pond then do a catfish fry to top it off!
I love to work in my yard, the wind and heat make everything a challenge. Normally it starts looking really good around the first of September through the first freeze. I dabble in oils, watercolor and acrylic painting. Western landscapes and wildlife normally, it just depends on the inspiration and I never know when that will take me down an unknown path!
Being thankful for God’s blessings every moment of everyday is my grounding!
Thanks for sharing with me! Hey, did you know tomorrow at sunset you will have the best view of a total eclipse of the sun? There’s supposed to be the ring of fire phenomenon going on with it, even, a rare occurrence. Hope your weather’s good so you can see it.
Y’all sound a lot like us. My fiance’/BFF is from Texas, too. And one day we’ll be doing the projects we’ve been dreaming of. Love that you’re busy enjoying life with no possibility of boredom.
Can I just say that I’m thrilled that I found your blog? I love the challenges, the information and the portal to so many other bloggers. If you chose to accept, I’ve nominated you for the Sunshine Blogger Award. You can find the info here: http://theforgottenwife.com/2012/05/24/part-deux-the-sunshine-blogger-award-interactive/
Thanks for such a great blog!

Wow, what an interesting blog you have! I’m the kind of person that find inspiration any and everywhere (hence the title of my blog). Yours is definitely an inspiring one!
1. What influences the essence of *you* most?
- I think Nature influences me the most, along with my significant other and music!!
2. What is your favorite food?
- I love food, especially when it’s delicious but I think Indonesian or Surinamese dishes might be my absolute favorite!
3. What is your favorite past-time?
- Listening to music, photography, being creative, art, poetry. Watching series (but that’s more my guilty pleasure).
I was also thinking if you’d like to swap blog? If you’re at all interested
(and even enjoy my blog)
