Sometimes three lines is too much to ask.
A hundred words could bleed me out. But I persist because the muse won’t let me rest.
There it waits, buzzing around the periphery looking for a safe spot to land.
It knows to be sneaky because if I see it, I’ll smash it faster than a bolt of lightning striking the nearest skyscraper’s rooftop rod.

Interesting concept, 100 words to jumpstart a longer story.
What I’ve been doing (I’ve only been writing these things for about a month) is consider the form a prose-poem, complete in itself, rather than a story, story fragment, or vignette. They’re usually inspired by a dream (jotted down as soon as I wake up) that I then massage and reshape over the next two or three hours.
I did two 100-worders this week, which are posted at http://furiousfictions.com.
Thanks, Madison!
Love that your stories are dream-insired, Joe. Thanks for joining us in our Friday madness! I left you some comments on your blog and am making my way down the list here. Lots of stories already this morning
Nice one, Mads.
I almost smashed mine trying to write something for this picture. Time alone on the mountain helps. Here’s a link to my attempt. http://ironwoodwind.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/homeland-security-2047/
Aloha,
Doug
It’s an odd love/hate relationship I have with my muse, lol. Heading your way next.
Nice one, Madison, bringing inspiration/irritation into the physical domain. I liked the alliteration in the last line too.
And here’s mine:
http://repuestodelatabla.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/trout-fishing-in-america/
Thanks, Carlos. I saw yours last night – loved the fishing lure and engineered fish!
You may smash the muse to smithereens, Madison, but I haven’t given up on you. You should do what I do and lie in bed in the morning, counting syllables on your fingers as you linger under the warm covers.
Oh – sorry. Guess that doesn’t help any.
Hope more of you Fictioneers will visit my haiku blog and torture yourself with the 5-7-5 form, too.
http://www.haikubyhaiku.wordpress.com.
But for this week, here’s my flash fiction. As usual, loved the photo, Madison!
http://jansthoughtsovercoffee.blogspot.com/2011/12/flashfriday-fictioneers-fly-on-wall.html
I did that!~!! OMG and I was furious with myself for still not getting one to work out right!
LOL. You and your haiku is going to be the end of my sanity.
Going to read your story next
And it better not be HAIKU.
The worn cowboy hat
It is not the Western style
Straw, like Arkansas
Aarrrrrggggghhhhh! That’s just wrong. Haiku terrorism on my own blog! Really, though Carlos, that’s good. Wish I could think of stuff like that. You should go put it on Jan’s Haiku blog – she left the link in her comment. LOL.
I read your story, and gotta say– I simultaneously want to purchase Super Fly from you and want sue the manufacturer. Its really upbeat for something that’s kind of dark. How many do you think actually exist right now? Nice job.
Great haiku, Carlos! You’re a natural. (Sorry, Mads.)
The Super Fly is kind of dark, isn’t it? Oh well. As long as it’s fiction . . .
I thought it was lovely, And pretty damned perfect, This prompt seems to have inspired more beauty and poetic writing than one would have thought from a mere nano-bot!
Sadly, I was not feeling poetic. Just fit into my ongoing train of thought…
http://fictionvictimtoo.blogspot.com
Very nice, Ms Glamoura. The prose had a nice, clean quality that I like and the literal definition of beauty juxtaposed with the idea of love was quite sublime. One of your best!
Heading your way now, Linda. Thanks
I love this one and the last line – I’ll smash it faster than a bolt of lightning striking the nearest skyscraper’s rooftop rod. Excellent!!
Here’s mine! 100 words with a little humor! “Into the Vortex”
http://susielindau.com/2011/12/30/into-the-vortex-100-word-flash-fiction/
It is very difficult to write laughter, but if I could, I’d be doing it here … and a happy new year to you!
Thank you!
Thanks Susie
Heading your way now – busy day today isn’t it! Lots of new Fictioneers on board!
By coincidence, mine is also called “Fly on the Wall.” http://mymusings-maggie.blogspot.com/2011/12/post-holiday-friday-flash-fiction.html
Neat story, Madison, especially after reading the description of your 5-7-5 struggles which produced it!
I often have ideas for longer stories prompted by the ideas I try to present in my flash fiction. And sometimes that happens weeks and months later if I re-read some of them! So, to that end, I try to keep up with all of them. For all of my flash entries that have already been posted online, I collect them in a central location.
Here is my 100 words for this week and if anyone is interested in doing more flash fiction, check out the links on the right hand side of the home page!
http://redshirt6.weebly.com/fridayfictioneers.html
@redshirt6
I do the same thing, Robby. All of my flash is housed under the tab Flash Fiction on my blog. The last short story written and submitted stemmed from a combination of two previous flashes that sat idle for months waiting for the right time to flesh them out. In my opinion, it’s the best short story I’ve ever written…haha, but I’m biased.
Heading your way next, time for one last read before I have to get out the door to run errands.
You might want to set up the comments on your blog so we can give you feed back. Fun Post!
My first time here. Great picture prompt.
I enjoyed your piece Madison. That muse can be a real pesky thing – I never know where mine is.
Here is my 100 word story.
http://mjshorts.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/dangerous-mission-100-words/
Just getting back to reading the stories now – headed your way first
Hey Madison,
I liked your story. The threat of the Muse, urging you to write more and more, dodging your attempts to quiet it.
My own muse and I get along pretty well, each supporting the other’s needs when the time comes. This morning she was willing to write a little 100 word story. It’s link is below. There is a adult content warning, but nothing explicit in blog post.
Siobhan

Loved how reality crashed in on your story, Siobhan
Coming up with words is the easy part. Deciding what order to put them in–now, that’s what’s hard.
Here’s mine. http://russellgayer.blogspot.com/
Wasn’t that originally a musician quote? In any case, it’s great. A similar one: “That’s not writing, it’s typing!” from Truman Capote, I believe.
Well, Russell, there were only a few words coming to mind and none of them were the kind I’d want to post in public
Ha. Going to read yours now.
This reads like a free verse poem! Great job, Madison – keep chasing those ideas!
My take on today’s pic:
http://wp.me/p1MNJe-cw
You know it didn’t feel that way when I wrote it, but after looking back on it now, it does read that way. Thanks
Now, Mads, that is totally unexpected and a great way to use that prompt. Good job!
Here’s mine: http://sweettea.kdmccrite.com/flash-fiction-3/when-little-wendell-sneezed-flash-fiction-122011/
Poor little Wendell’s mom must live in constant fear, LOL.
Have just posted my entry at http://fulmoj.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/entry-for-fridayfictioneers-30-dec-2011/
100 words
@LupusAnthropos
Loved it!
Wow! That was some cue!
Got me thinking a long while…
Finally came with something!

Heading your way now Parul
Glad you joined us!
I’m sending the muse on vacation, all expenses paid! Just for the weekend. She must be awake and raring to go come Monday morning!
Linda Joyce
I hope she comes back refreshed and ready to write
Have a happy break!
Okay – I will be heading out to run some errands and then have a New Year’s party to go to tonight. If I haven’t made it through everyone’s links by the end of the day, I’ll be at your blog tomorrow!
Thank you all for being great Friday Fictioneers – it’s so much fun to interact and comment on everyone’s blogs all at the same time

Nice little story! My muse have flown off somewhere and hasn’t been seen in a while. It could be that I’ve ignored it for so long that I’ve hurt it’s feeling, which I will make it up to it after the New Year! I’ve got too much on my plate right now
(will be performing on New Years Eve) but after all this, expect me and my
muse back to Flash Fridays! Have a safe and Happy New Year!!
I hope you get pictures from your performance-bdance? I’d love to see! Happy new year to you too
Sent from my iPhone… You should have seen the typos I *did* catch!
The muse is fickle and sometimes sour as a pickle.
But other times, she opens up whole new worlds to me.
Here’s the link to my musings:

Finally getting to read your story now! Very glad to see you and all the new faces here on Friday Fictioneer day. It’s madness, but a lot of fun and I hope you’ll join us next weekend too
I do that with last week’s drabble. Today’s drabble, too, probably. And I completely sympathize with your story this week. LOL
Mine: http://storytreasury.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/friday-flash-the-portrait/
I loved your story, Sonia! You have such a gift for writing the paranormal femme fatale.
Thanks so much Madison!
There are so many energetic verbs and technology/mad sciency based nouns in your flash fiction this week, Madison. It seems as if your frustration with the haiku has combined with the nanotechnological fly to evoke Frankenstein. I mean, the muse shows up and author jumps on it ASAP to create. I love it.
Here is my link: http://quillshiv.wordpress.com/2011/12/30/thetiniestspy/
And I’m going to start making my way down the list now
I didn’t notice all the mad-sciency nouns but now I see them LOL. Heading your way now!
Posted my story here:
http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2983862/1/Her_Words_Not_Mine
But my blog is here:

comments welcome on both! thanks for the challenge. I’m having a trouble writing an ending to a longer story at the moment.
Hopefully a little 100-wordplay will help with that. Sometimes a complete change in direction lets my subconscious think of what it wants while I’m preoccupied. Endings are the hardest part for me!
Hope to see you back next time
Very nicely written. I can certainly appreciate the anaolgy of the muse being an annoyingly unavoidable flying pest.
My own debut contribution to this prompt can be found at: jeffreyhollar.com/2011/12/unfortunate-setback.html
Thanks Jeffrey and glad to have you join us in our fun! Hope you’ll like it enough to come back next weekend too
Heading over to your story now…and I think you’re the last one on the list. It took me a little while to make it through them all this week – we had a lot!
When considering the muse aspect of our host’s story, it’s interesting to imagine nine of those things all buzzing around at the same time.
Now THAT would definitely bring the insanity to a whole new level!
Sent from my iPhone… You should have seen the typos I *did* catch!

YES. I got that ending done. Thank goodness. I appreciate your help getting me back on the writing track!!!
How awesome is that? Thanks for letting me know the #100words helped!
